Quick answer
A fence estimate shows your business name, contact details and license number, the customer and property address, an estimate number, the date and a valid-until date. It gives the fence run in linear feet, the height and material, then prices posts, panels or pickets, gates, hardware, removal of the old fence and labor line by line. Add material options, sales tax where it applies, the total, any deposit, exclusions and a signature block.

Fence estimates, part by part
A homeowner comparing fence bids mostly wants to know three things: how much fence, what it's made of and what the gates cost. Put those up front and your estimate is easy to compare, and easy to sign.
Start with your business name, contact details and license number. The FTC tells homeowners to look for a contractor's license number and says a written estimate should describe the work, the materials, the completion date and the price. Then the customer's name, property address, date and estimate number.
Describe the fence run in linear feet, with the height and style: "180 linear ft, 6 ft cedar privacy fence, dog-ear pickets, back and both sides of yard." A rough sketch or a note on which sides helps, too.
Then price the parts line by line: posts, with how they're set; panels, pickets or chain link fabric by the foot; rails; and each gate with its hardware, priced on its own because gates vary so much. Add removal and haul-away of the old fence if there is one.
Fencing is made for options: wood, vinyl and chain link, or 4 ft against 6 ft, each priced in full, with your recommendation marked.
Below the lines: sales tax where it applies, the total, any deposit, a valid-until date and what is not included, such as clearing brush along the line or digging through rock. Say who confirms the property line and any HOA or permit rules. End with a signature block.

Questions
What should a fence estimate include?
Your business details and license number, the customer and property address, an estimate number and date, the fence run in linear feet with height and style, posts, panels or pickets, gates and hardware, removal of the old fence, labor, options, sales tax where it applies, the total, deposit, valid-until date, exclusions and a signature block.
Should I price a fence by the linear foot?
Most fence contractors do for the run itself, then price gates, corners and removal separately. Write the unit in the line name, such as "6 ft cedar privacy fence (per linear foot)", so the customer can check the length.
Who is responsible for finding the property line?
Say on the estimate. Many contractors write that the customer confirms the property line and any HOA or permit rules before work starts. It avoids disputes with neighbors after the posts are set.
Should I ask for a deposit on a fence estimate?
That is your call. It can make sense when you order lumber, vinyl panels or custom gates before the install. If you take one, put the amount on the estimate. Some states limit how much a contractor can ask for as a down payment, so check your state's rules before you set one.
Can my customer sign the fence estimate online?
With the downloaded file, they sign on paper or send back a signed scan. If you make the estimate in the Quoza fence estimate maker, the customer gets a link, reads it on their phone and signs online.
Can I download the template in Word or Excel?
Yes. The fence estimate template comes as a PDF, a Word file and an Excel sheet, all free and with no email required.
