Handyman receipts, part by part
Handyman work is often paid on the spot, in cash or by check, for a list of small jobs done in one visit. That is exactly when a receipt matters most: it is the customer's proof they paid and your record of what came in. The IRS lists receipts and invoices among the supporting documents a business keeps, and cash jobs are the easiest ones to lose track of.
Start with a receipt number and the date, on their own sequence. Add your business name and contact details, then the customer's name and address.
Then the three facts: the amount received, the payment method and what it covers. For a visit with several tasks, list them briefly: "Hang interior door, patch drywall in hallway, mount TV." If you sent an estimate or invoice, add its number.
Show the balance still owed, or write "Paid in full". If the customer supplied a part, such as a light fixture, the receipt only needs to cover what they paid you for. Finish with "Received by" and your name, and sign a printed copy.
A short, clear receipt also helps when the customer calls you back for the next job. They can see exactly what you did last time and what it cost, which makes the next price easier to agree.
If you charge a trip charge or a minimum visit, make it part of the amount on the invoice the receipt refers to, or list it on the receipt itself. A customer who sees every charge written down rarely disputes it.

Questions
What should a handyman receipt include?
A receipt number and date, your business details, the customer's name and address, the amount received, how they paid, what it covers (the tasks, or the estimate or invoice number), any balance still owed and "Received by" with your name.
Is an invoice the same as a receipt?
No. An invoice says what the customer owes for the visit. A receipt confirms they paid. If you invoiced, write the invoice number on the receipt.
Do I need to give a receipt for cash payments?
It is good practice. Cash leaves no trail, so a receipt is the customer's proof of payment and your record of the money you took in.
Can I send a handyman receipt by text or email?
Yes. Fill in the Word or PDF file, save it as a PDF and text or email it before you leave.
Can one receipt cover several small jobs?
Yes. If the customer pays for the whole visit at once, list the tasks briefly, such as "Door install, drywall patch, TV mounting", and write the total received.
