Quick answer
A handyman estimate shows your business details, the customer and job address, an estimate number and a valid-until date. It lists each task on its own line, such as hanging a door or patching drywall, with a task price or estimated hours and rate, plus materials you will supply and any trip charge. Add sales tax where it applies, the total, any deposit, your terms and a signature block for the customer to accept.

Handyman estimates, part by part
A handyman estimate is usually a list, not a single job. The customer has a door that sticks, a hole in the drywall, a TV to mount and a fence board to replace. The estimate should price each of those so the customer can see where the money goes, and drop or add a task without you redoing the whole thing.
Start with your business name and contact details, and a license number if your state requires one for the work you do. Then the customer's name, job address, date and estimate number. The FTC's advice to homeowners is that a written estimate should describe the work, the materials, the completion date and the price. A task-by-task list covers all four.
Write each task on its own line in plain words: "Hang and trim new interior door", "Patch and paint 2 drywall holes, hallway", "Mount TV on customer's bracket". Give each one a labor price, or estimated hours and your hourly rate if that is how you work.
List the materials you'll supply with quantity and price, and mark anything the customer is supplying, like a TV bracket or light fixture, with no price, so it is clear you are only charging to install it. If you have a trip charge or minimum visit, list it.
Below the lines: sales tax where it applies, the total, any deposit, a valid-until date, short terms (for example, what happens if you find rot behind the trim), and a signature block.

Common jobs this template fits
Handymen use this estimate for door installs, drywall patches, TV mounting, furniture assembly and fence repairs, and for a "honey-do" list of small jobs priced together. It works for a one-task visit and a full day's list.
When the work is done, bill it with the handyman invoice template. The handyman industry page shows how Quoza handles handyman estimates.

Questions
What should a handyman estimate include?
Your business details, the customer and job address, an estimate number and date, each task on its own line with a price or estimated hours, materials, customer-supplied items, any trip charge, sales tax where it applies, the total, deposit, valid-until date, terms and a signature block.
Is a handyman estimate the same as a quote?
People use the words loosely. An estimate is usually your expected price, a quote a firmer price for a defined list of tasks. If you price by the task, your estimate already works like a quote. If you charge by the hour, say the hours are an estimate.
How long should a handyman estimate be valid?
Long enough for the customer to decide, short enough that material prices still hold. Put a clear valid-until date on every estimate. The Quoza estimate maker puts a valid-until date on every estimate for you.
Should I ask for a deposit on a handyman estimate?
That is your call. It can make sense when you buy a door, fixtures or other materials before the visit. If you take one, put the amount and how to pay it on the estimate so it is agreed at signing. Some states limit how much a contractor can ask for as a down payment, so check your state's rules before you set one.
Can my customer sign the handyman estimate online?
With the downloaded file, they sign on paper or send a signed scan. If you make the estimate in the Quoza handyman estimate maker, the customer gets a link, reads it on their phone and signs online.
Can I download the template in Word or Excel?
Yes. The handyman estimate template comes as a PDF, a Word file and an Excel sheet. All three are free with no email required.
