Electrical receipts, part by part
Electrical jobs are often paid in steps. A homeowner pays a deposit so you can order a panel or a Level 2 charger, then pays the balance after the inspection. A receipt for each step means no one has to remember who paid what, and it gives you a record for your books. The IRS lists receipts and invoices among the supporting documents a business keeps.
At the top, a receipt number and the date. Run receipts on their own sequence so they never get confused with estimate or invoice numbers. Then your business name, contact details and license number, and the customer's name and job address.
Next, the amount received, the payment method and what it was for. "Deposit on estimate 3110, paid by card" or "Final payment, invoice 3131, paid by check" settles it in one line. Add the job in a few words too, such as "Panel upgrade" or "Kitchen lighting install", so the receipt makes sense on its own.
If anything is still owed, write the balance. If the job is settled, write "Paid in full". End with "Received by" and your name, plus a signature if you hand over a printed copy.
If the job needed a permit, you can add the permit number next to the job description. It ties the payment to the inspected work and helps the homeowner if they sell the house later and need the paperwork.

Electrical jobs this template fits
Electricians write receipts for deposits on a panel upgrade, an EV charger install or a rewire, and for payment on lighting installs and outlet and switch work paid at the end of the visit. It works for a one-hour service call and a multi-day job paid in stages.
Keep it in line with the electrical estimate template, which sets the price and any deposit, and the electrical invoice template, which bills the balance. Use the same job number on all three.
Download it free
The electrical receipt template comes as a printable PDF and an editable Word file. Download either one without giving an email address, print a few for the truck or fill one in on your phone.
If the payment is a deposit on new work, send the estimate first. The electrical estimate maker lets you fill one in online, see what your customer gets and send it for them to sign before you order the panel or charger.

Questions
What should an electrical receipt include?
A receipt number and date, your business details and license number, the customer's name and job address, the amount received, how it was paid, what it was for, the job in a few words, the balance still owed and "Received by" with your name.
Is an invoice the same as a receipt?
No. The invoice asks the customer to pay for the rewire or install. The receipt confirms the payment arrived. Write the invoice number on the receipt so the customer can tick one off against the other.
Do I need to give a receipt for a deposit?
It is good practice. On a panel upgrade or EV charger install you may buy the panel or charger first. A receipt for the deposit, naming the estimate and the balance left, gives both of you a clean record.
Can I send an electrical receipt by text or email?
Yes. Fill in the Word or PDF file, save it as a PDF and attach it to a text or email. Name the file with the receipt number so it is easy to find.
Is this electrical receipt template free?
Yes. The printable PDF and the Word file are free to download, with no email address needed.
