Electrical estimates, part by part
Electrical work is hard for a homeowner to picture. They can't see the load on a panel or the run of a new circuit. A good electrical estimate translates the job into plain words and clear prices, so the customer understands what they are agreeing to and you have a written scope to work from.
Put your business name, contact details and electrical license number at the top. The FTC tells homeowners to look for a contractor's license number on their paperwork, and its advice is that a written estimate should describe the work, the materials, the completion date and the price. Then the customer's name, job address, date and estimate number.
Write the scope the way you would explain it at the kitchen table: "Replace 100A panel with 200A panel, move 18 existing circuits, add 2 new 20A kitchen circuits." Then say what is not included, for example drywall repair or utility company fees.
List labor as a job price or as estimated hours and rate, and materials with quantity and price. Note any permit and inspection and who arranges them.
If the customer has real choices, such as a standard or smart panel, or a basic or full lighting package, show good, better and best options, each priced in full, with the one you recommend marked. Below that, add sales tax where it applies, the total, any deposit, a valid-until date, short terms for changes found once walls are open, and a signature block.

Questions
What should an electrical estimate include?
Your business details and license number, the customer and job address, an estimate number and date, the scope, labor, materials with quantities, any permit and inspection, options if relevant, sales tax where it applies, the total, deposit, valid-until date, terms and a signature block.
Is an electrical estimate the same as a quote or a bid?
The words overlap. An estimate is usually your expected price, a quote a firmer price for a set scope, and a bid a price submitted against other electricians, common on commercial work. On any of them, write down exactly what the price covers and what it doesn't.
How long should an electrical estimate be valid?
Long enough for the customer to decide, short enough that your material prices still hold. Put a clear valid-until date on every estimate. The Quoza estimate maker puts a valid-until date on every estimate for you.
Should I ask for a deposit on an electrical estimate?
That is your call. It can make sense when you order a panel, a charger or special fixtures before the job. If you take one, put the amount and how to pay it on the estimate so it is agreed at signing. Some states limit how much a contractor can ask for as a down payment, so check your state's rules before you set one.
Can my customer sign the electrical estimate online?
With the downloaded file, they sign on paper or send a signed scan. If you make the estimate in the Quoza electrical estimate maker, the customer gets a link, reads it on their phone and signs online.
Can I download the template in Word or Excel?
Yes. The electrical estimate template comes as a PDF, a Word file and an Excel sheet. All three are free with no email required.
