Quick answer
A roofing quote gives a fixed price for a defined job. It shows your business details and VAT number if you're registered, the customer and property address, a quote number and date, the scope of works with scaffolding, stripping, battens, membrane, slates or tiles and leadwork priced separately, any options, whether prices include VAT, how long the price is valid, any deposit, when the price could change, and a space to accept.
What to include
- Business name, address and contact details; VAT number if VAT-registered
- Customer's name, property address, date and quote number
- Scope of works: what's included and what isn't
- Scaffolding and access
- Strip, battens and breathable membrane
- Slates or tiles, ridge and leadwork, with quantities
- Options, such as natural or man-made slate, one recommended
- VAT: prices shown inc. or exc. VAT
- Deposit, quote valid until and when the price can change
- Acceptance: customer's signature and date

Roofing quotes, part by part
A homeowner facing a re-roof will usually get several quotes, and they're hard to compare. One includes scaffolding, new battens and lead; another is a single figure with "re-roof" next to it. Citizens Advice tells customers a written quote should give a fixed total, break down the work and materials, say how long the price is valid and whether VAT is included, and explain when the price could go up. A roofing quote laid out that way is easy to say yes to.
Start with your business name, address and contact details, and your VAT number if you're registered. Then the customer's name, the property address, the date and a quote number.
Write the scope of works in plain English: "Strip existing concrete tiles from front and rear slopes, replace battens and fit breathable membrane, re-tile with new interlocking tiles, new dry ridge, renew lead flashing to chimney, remove all waste." Then say what's not included, such as fascias and soffits or the chimney stack itself.
Price each part on its own line, with quantities: scaffolding and access, stripping and disposal, battens and membrane, the slates or tiles, ridge and hips, and leadwork. Where the customer has a real choice, set out options: natural slate against a man-made slate, or a repair against a full re-roof, each priced in full, with your recommendation marked.
Then VAT (inc. or exc.), the total, any deposit, a valid-until date, and a line on when the price can change, such as rotten rafters or boarding found once the roof is stripped, with the price per length or sheet. Finish with an acceptance box.
Set it up once, then reuse it
- Download the Word or PDF file and save a master with your business details and VAT number if you have one.
- After the survey, fill in the customer, property address, date, quote number and valid-until date.
- Write the scope and exclusions, then scaffolding, strip, battens, covering and leadwork.
- Add options and the price for any hidden repairs.
- Add VAT, deposit and terms, then send it and ask the customer to accept.

Questions
What should a roofing quote include?
Your business details and VAT number if registered, the customer and property address, a quote number and date, the scope of works, scaffolding, strip, battens and membrane, slates or tiles, ridge and leadwork, options, VAT, the total, any deposit, how long it's valid, when the price can change and an acceptance box.
What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?
Citizens Advice describes a quote as a fixed price and an estimate as a rough guess that could end up higher. Quote firmly for what you can see, and say on the quote how you'll price rotten rafters or decking found once the roof is stripped.
Should a roofing quote include VAT?
If you're VAT-registered, show VAT and say clearly whether prices include or exclude it. Citizens Advice tells customers to check this. If you're not registered, leave the VAT lines blank and say so.
Should scaffolding be a separate line?
Yes. Scaffolding is often a big part of a roofing price, and customers comparing quotes want to see it. A separate line also makes it clear if the hire is for a set number of weeks.
Can I download the template in Word?
Yes. The roofing quote template comes as an editable Word file and a PDF, on A4 with prices in pounds. Both are free, with no email required.
