Quick answer

A handyman quote gives a fixed price for a list of jobs. It shows your business details and VAT number if registered, the customer and address, a quote number and date, each job on its own line with labour and materials, items the customer is supplying, any call-out charge, whether VAT is included, how long the price is valid, when the price could change, and a space for the customer to accept and sign.

What to include

  • Business name, address and contact details; VAT number if VAT-registered
  • Customer's name, address, date and quote number
  • Each job on its own line, in plain words
  • Labour per job, or hours at your rate
  • Materials you'll supply, with quantities and prices
  • Customer-supplied items marked, with no price
  • Call-out charge or minimum visit, if you have one
  • VAT: prices shown inc. or exc. VAT
  • Quote valid until, and when the price can change
  • Acceptance: customer's signature and date

Handyman quotes, part by part

A handyman quote is usually a list rather than one job: a sticking door, a dripping gutter, shelves to put up and a wardrobe to build. Pricing each one separately lets the customer see where the money goes, and drop or add a job without you starting again. It also matches what Citizens Advice tells customers to look for in a written quote: a fixed total rather than a day rate, separate costs for each part of the work, how long the price is valid, whether VAT is included and when the price could change.

Start with your business name, address and contact details, plus your VAT number if you're registered. Then the customer's name, address, the date and a quote number.

Write each job on its own line in plain English: "Ease and rehang sticking back door", "Clear and reseal gutter joint, rear", "Fit 3 floating shelves, alcove", "Assemble flat-pack wardrobe". Give each a labour price, or hours at your rate if that's how you work, and say the hours are an estimate.

List the materials you'll supply with quantities and prices, and mark anything the customer is supplying, such as the shelves or a light fitting, with no price, so it's clear you're only charging to fit it. If you have a call-out charge or minimum visit, include it.

Then VAT (inc. or exc.), the total, a valid-until date and a line on when the price can change, for example if you find rot behind a door frame. Finish with an acceptance box for the customer's signature and date.

Set it up once, then reuse it

  • Download the Word or PDF file and save a master with your business details.
  • Walk round with the customer and write down every job.
  • Fill in the customer, address, date, quote number and valid-until date.
  • Price each job, add materials, customer-supplied items and any call-out.
  • Add VAT and terms, then send it and ask the customer to sign.

Common jobs this template fits

Questions

What should a handyman quote include?

Your business details and VAT number if registered, the customer and address, a quote number and date, each job on its own line with labour, materials you'll supply, customer-supplied items, any call-out charge, VAT, the total, how long it's valid, when the price can change, and an acceptance box.

What is the difference between a quote and an estimate in the UK?

Citizens Advice describes a quote as a fixed price and an estimate as a rough guess that could end up higher. If you price each job firmly, it's a quote. If you charge by the hour and can't be sure how long a job takes, call the hours an estimate.

Should a handyman quote include VAT?

If you're VAT-registered, show VAT and say clearly whether prices include or exclude it. Citizens Advice tells customers to check this. If you're not registered, leave the VAT lines blank and add a short note saying so.

How long is a handyman quote valid for?

As long as you say. Put a clear "valid until" date on every quote so an old price doesn't come back after material prices have moved. The Quoza quote maker puts a valid-until date on every quote for you.

Can my customer accept the quote online?

With the downloaded file, they sign a printed copy or send back a signed scan. If you make the quote in the Quoza handyman quote maker, the customer gets a link, reads it on their phone and accepts it online.

Can I download the template in Word?

Yes. The handyman quote template comes as an editable Word file and a PDF, on A4 with prices in pounds. Both are free and you don't need to enter an email address.
