Quick answer

An electrical quote gives a fixed price for a defined job. It shows your business details, scheme membership and VAT number if you have them, the customer and job address, a quote number and date, the scope of works, labour and materials priced separately, the certificate you'll issue, whether VAT is included, how long the price is valid, any deposit, when the price could change, and a space for the customer to accept.

What to include

  • Business name, address and contact details; VAT number if VAT-registered
  • Competent person scheme membership, if you're registered
  • Customer's name, job address, date and quote number
  • Scope of works: what's included and what isn't
  • Labour and materials priced separately, with quantities
  • Certificate you'll issue on completion
  • Options, such as a standard or upgraded consumer unit, one recommended
  • VAT: prices shown inc. or exc. VAT
  • Deposit, quote valid until, and when the price can change
  • Acceptance: customer's signature and date

Electrical quotes, part by part

Customers can't see what's behind a consumer unit cover, so an electrical quote has to do the explaining. Citizens Advice tells people to look for a fixed total price, a breakdown of the work and materials, how long the price is valid, whether VAT is included and when the price could go up. An electrical quote that covers all of that is easy to compare and easy to accept.

Start with your business name, address and contact details, your VAT number if you're registered, and your competent person scheme membership (for example NICEIC or NAPIT) if you have one. Then the customer's name, the job address, the date and a quote number.

Write the scope of works in plain English: "Replace existing fuse board with new 10-way RCBO consumer unit, test all circuits, issue Electrical Installation Certificate." Then say what's not included, such as making good plaster after chasing cables, or remedial work on circuits that fail testing.

Price labour and materials separately, with quantities: consumer unit, RCBOs, cable, accessories, fittings. Note the certificate you'll issue at the end, whether an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Works certificate, so the customer knows what paperwork to expect.

If there's a genuine choice, such as a standard consumer unit or one with surge protection, or basic downlights against a fully dimmable scheme, set out options, each priced in full, and mark the one you'd recommend.

Then VAT (inc. or exc.), the total, any deposit, a valid-until date, and a line on when the price can change, for example if testing finds faults that need fixing first. Finish with an acceptance box.

Set it up once, then reuse it

  • Download the Word or PDF file and save a master with your business details, VAT number and scheme membership.
  • After the survey, fill in the customer, job address, date, quote number and valid-until date.
  • Write the scope and exclusions, then the labour and materials lines.
  • Note the certificate you'll issue and add options if the customer has a real choice.
  • Add VAT, deposit and terms, then send it and ask the customer to sign.

Common jobs this template fits

Electricians use this quote for consumer unit replacements, EV charger installs, rewires, lighting and EICR remedial work. It works for a half-day job and a full house rewire.

When the job's done, bill it with the electrical invoice template. The electrical industry page shows how Quoza handles electrical quotes.

Questions

What should an electrical quote include?

Your business details and VAT number if registered, the customer and job address, a quote number and date, the scope of works, labour and materials priced separately, the certificate you'll issue, options if relevant, VAT, the total, any deposit, how long it's valid, when the price can change, and an acceptance box.

What is the difference between a quote and an estimate in the UK?

Citizens Advice describes a quote as a fixed price and an estimate as a rough guess that could end up higher. If you can price the job firmly after a survey, call it a quote. If you can't see the wiring yet, give an estimate and explain what could change it.

Should an electrical quote include VAT?

If you're VAT-registered, show VAT and say clearly whether your prices include or exclude it. Citizens Advice tells customers to check this. If you're not registered, leave the VAT lines blank and add a short note saying so.

How long is an electrical quote valid for?

As long as you say. Put a clear "valid until" date on every quote so an old price can't come back after cable and consumer unit prices have moved. The Quoza quote maker puts a valid-until date on every quote for you.

Can my customer accept the quote online?

With the downloaded file, they sign a printed copy or send back a signed scan. If you make the quote in the Quoza electrical quote maker, the customer gets a link, reads it on their phone and accepts it online.

Can I download the template in Word?

Yes. The electrical quote template comes as an editable Word file and a PDF, on A4 with prices in pounds. Both are free and you don't need to enter an email address.
